Wjhat to do with an old aquaroum?
I have this big 4 foot long aquarium that has been sitting around for ages in a spare room. If I had my way, I'd given it away already since we have no more use for it but my mom dioes not want to dispose of it for whatever reasons i do not know. Now I want to use the spare room for my mini gym. Any suggestions and ideas on how i can make use of this thing anyway aside from gathering dust?
Since your mom may want to use it again as an aquarium, any option involving chemicals is out. Also, depending on what was in there before, there may be chemicals IN there that may kill plants/animals other than fish (or maybe including fish). Also, I've seen 4 ft tanks that are about 1 ft deep to ones that are 3 ft deep... A 3+ ft deep one would be iffy for a planter or storage, but great for a display case, and vice versa for a 1-2 ft deep one. Anything between 2-3 feet is up to you, I guess.
So, three options:
Storage: You can cut up cardboard (to width or length, and some supporting pieces -- slot them to slide them onto the main pieces) to divide up the space if you want to. Since the aquarium is clear, you can paint the cardboard various colors/designs so it'll look more constructed than "hey, an aquarium with stuff in it". If you don't want to see the stuff, wrap the aquarium with paper like it's a present (tape, etc on the outside), then paint or leave as-is). Just remember to use it for soft stuff storage -- clean changes of clothes, shoes, towels, cleaner/air freshener, dirty clothes, etc. Approximate cost: $5-15.
Planter: Buy a couple of large peace lilies/white sails or other large low light/care plants that would fill out the length of the aquarium. Buy 2-3 large bales of peat moss. Spread the bottom with a bale of moss to about 6 "fluffy" inches thick. Put the lilies on the moss, in the pots they came in. Spread the rest of the peat moss so that it hides the plastic pots. Since you're planning on using the room for a mini gym, this is a great option since the plants will greatly reduce or entirely remove the inevitable sweaty/musty smell the room will get. Your mom might foot the bill for it, just for that reason. Make sure to put them near a window that gets decent light, but not all-day light (put them to the side instead of in front of the window if it gets a lot of light). Approximate cost: $40-70, depending on local prices and the size/type of the plants you get.
Table top/display case: Get a piece of luaun or other thin wood board (1/8" thick). Cut it to overlap the aquarium by at least 1 inch on each side (measure length/width of aquarium, then add 2+ inches to your measurement). Paint or stain it any color you want. Buy some stick-on felt pads used to put on the bottom of floor legs to prevent scuffing flooring. Center your top and outline where your aquarium corners are. Cut the felt pads into strips and line up the strips along your lines so that will be on the outside of the aquarium. Place trophies, sports equipment, or motivational stuff in the aquarium. Cap the aquarium and use it as a tabletop -- do not put more than 10 lbs on it though, as aquariums are not built to take vertical pressure (and everyone tends to underestimate how heavy their stuff is). However, you can use it to hold a small lightweight stereo and towels, as well as a few sports drinks. You can also use heavy duty cardboard for the top, but just cut off one of the large sides along all its corners, reinforce the other seams with tape/glue/staples (inside the box so you can still paint it if you want), and just cap off the aquarium with what's left. To stop it from sliding around, do that felt strips trick. Call guitar stores and ask if they have any guitar boxes. You can also buy a new cardboard box used for moving that will suit the same purpose for about $12. Approximate cost for wood top: $15-25, depending on local prices, stain/paint options, and if you have to pay to get cuts made.
