Can putting stuffed toys in a baby's crib really put them at risk for SIDS?
A recent question here implied that putting stuffed toys in a baby's crib puts them at risk of SIDS. I'm not sure how this could happen- other than the stuffed toy might suffocate the baby. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks.
Yes, it can. Here's the explanation. As far as researchers can tell, it appears that some babies are born pre-determined to be at greater risk of SIDS. Their brain-stems don't monitor the buildup of carbon dioxide. When a normal person is asleep, if they get sheets or pillows around their face and it forms a pocket causing a buildup of CO2, the brain stem alerts the body to change position. This gives fresh air to the body and prevents problems. In a SIDS case, this doesn't happen. The baby continues to sleep as CO2 chokes out the oxygen supply and the baby continues to breathe but asphyxiates in their sleep. The pillows, extra blankets, stuffed animals, all act as agents that can get near the baby's face and cause these pockets.
