Why do people have different skins colors, eye shapes, facial features?
Did our ancestors develop to have lighter or darker skin and certain eye shapes and facial features in response to evolutionary pressures?
What is the benefit of any of these different features?
The earliest known ancestors to modern humans lived in regions which are associated with darker skinned peoples. Migration patterns indicate that early humans eventually made their way to other habitable regions and adapted accordingly. So, our ancestors had dark skin which suited the regions in which they lived.
Eye shapes I am not sure on. I think that the forensic evidence points to almond shaped eyes for our earliest ancestors.
Evolutionary adaptations are both a result of survival skills as well as mate selection. Skin tones vary by region because of melanin. By absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, melanin controls the amount that penetrates the skin. UV radiation is needed to manufacture vitamin D, but too much can damage the skin and degrade folate.
The evolution of the different skin tones is thought to have occurred in response to climatic conditions.The haired primate ancestors of humans, like modern great apes, had light skin. When hominids evolved relatively hairless skin (the most likely function of which was to facilitate perspiration)[citation needed] while living in sun-rich Africa, they co-evolved dark skin, which was needed to control the adverse effects of ultraviolet radiation on folate levels. When their descendants migrated to less sun-intensive regions in the north, low vitamin D3 levels became a problem and light skin color re-emerged. Sexual selection and diet may have played a part in the evolution of skin tone diversity as well.
Facial features such as the shape and size of the nose, brow ridges, cheek bones, etc are also related to the climate and atmosphere as well as sexual preference.
