What do I need to know before oil painting on a lamb or sheep skin?
Do I just paint it or should the skin be treated in a special way? Will the leather deteriorate over time or is they a way to preserve it?
Oil painting onto an unstable surface like animal skin is a bad idea. Oil paint becomes brittle with time and is not nearly flexible enough for a loose fabric or skin. Any cloth is usually stretched onto a frame or mounted to a flat and stable surface like a wood panel or sheet of metal. If you treated the leather, sheep or lamb skin with a sizing like rabbit skin glue or PVA you would still need to keep the surface from moving too much. Paintings are sometimes rolled up and stored but their survival is dependent upon the manner in which they were constructed. The paint should be kept thin. This does not mean thinned with solvent. It means the paint layer has to be thin and not thick impasto. Certain mediums and pigments are prone to cracking while paints containing lead are more flexible.
