King of the Jungle: Lion or Giraffe?
My dad was saying that a Lion is not the king of the jungle. He said a Giraffe is way more powerful, making the Giraffe king of the jungle. True or false?
Lions do not live in jungles, they live in savannahs. Elephants are even more powerful than the giraffe, but even an elephant can be brought down by a pride of lionesses. Lionesses do most of the hunting because the lions are too big and therefore slow to get close enough to prey. Without lionesses, a lion will starve. A lion that has been driven away from a pride by other lions will not live long for that reason. Nevertheless, lionesses need lions to help maintain the territory from other prides of lions.
It is true that adult giraffes are immune to lion attack, since their kick can be so deadly, and since their neck is way up there and beyond the reach of lions. Nevetheless, baby giraffes are vulnerable, and adult giraffes can be vulnerable while they are drinking. The giraffe's neck is also a powerful weapon.
In the end however, kings are "crowned" not just because they are powerful but also because they are able to eat other animals. The king cobra, for example, is so named because it is able to subdue and feed on other snakes. Since the giraffe is a vegetarian, it probably cannot be called king of anything.
Since kings must rely on taxing their subjects to survive, lions therefore do fit the description of king best, since they rule over the lionesses and "tax" them for food.
