very yv ery dif icult lcoleg levl mat pls help me its collg problem?
IM TAKING PREALGEBRA AT MY LOCAL COLLEGE AND HAVING DIFFICULTY UNDERSTANDING CONCEPTS LIKE SOLVE FOR X OR Y. ITS CONFUSIN ME CUZ IM JUST USED TO MATH WITH NUMBERS SO FOR EXAMPLE HWO CAN U DO APROCLEM LIKE X + 3 = 7 I REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND THE METHOD OF FINDING X BECAUSE X IS NOT A NUMBER IT'S PART OF THE ALPHABET SO IT OWNT MAKE SENSE. I ALMOST HAD A CHANCE TO GO FOR TUTORING BUT I COULDNT MAKE IT CAUSE ME AND MY G/F HAD A DATE
SO YA...
THX GUYS..
Well... when I was working on my Masters on math, I didn't have time for dates except on occasional weekends. If your education is important to you, you need to spend more time studying and less time on dates. Hire a tutor and go. Waaaay back when I was in college, I did some tutoring. I charged $20 an hour... and back then that was some money. If you didn't show up... I just added it to your bill. Next time, before we started, I'd get paid $40 up front.... it's okay if you didn't pay though. No other tutor would come near you. Tutors compete, but the also take care of each other.
You need tutoring in English too... as has been pointed out. I was a teaching assistant in a statistics class. One student couldn't write. I put a note on her homework paper that statistics is supposed to communicate information, and if I can't read it, you're not communicating.... SO YA...
I'll tell you everything you need to know.
First, at the present time you are dealing with real numbers. Doesn't make any difference if you represent a number with a squiggle that looks like ℟ or one that looks like ƪ or one that looks like ƕ, or one that looks like 5. They all obey the same rules.
Here are the rules. You don't need to know the names right now... but you will soon.
a+b=b+a commutative property of addition.
(a+b)+c=a+(b+c) associative property of addition.
ab=ba commutative property of multiplication
(ab)c=a(bc) associative property of multiplication.
a(b+c)=ab+ac distributive property of multiplication over addition.
These properties are true for every a, b, and c you can think of in the real numbers.
1 has this property. Anything you multiply it by, you get that thing back. Huh? 2x1=2. ƕx1=ƕ.
0 has two properties.
. . (a) . Anything you add to it you get that thing back. 2+0=2. ƕ+0=ƕ.
. . (b) . No matter what you multiply it by you get 0. 2x0=0. ƕx0=0
A couple more things and I'm done with numbers.
For any number you give me, I can give you another number that when you add your number and mine, you get 0. If you give me 2, I'll give you -2. If you give me -3/4, I'll give you 3/4. If you give me ƕ, I'll give you -ƕ. Some people call them "negatives," but as you can see at least half of each pair is positive. The proper term is additive inverse. Some people call adding an additive inverse of a number "subtracting" that number. So they call adding the additive inverse of 3 (-3) to 5, "subtracting 3 from 5" -3 + 5 = 5 + -3 (commutivity for addition)... looks like 5-3... right. But now you know what that means.
For almost any number you give me, I can give you another number, I can give you another number so that when you multiply your number by mine, you get 1. If you give 2, I'll give you 1/2. If you give me -3/4, I'll give you -4/3. If you give me ƕ, I'll give you 1/ƕ. These numbers are called multiplicative inverses of each other. But most people call them reciprocals. People often call multiplying by the reciprocal of a number, "dividing by" that number. So, they call multiplying by 1/2 "dividing by 2."
You'll note that I said ALMOST every number has a reciprocal. Remember the second property of 0, (0 multiplied by any number gives 0)? There is no number that you can multiply 0 by to get 1. Zero has no reciprocal. Ever been told you can't divide by 0? Well division by zero is really the multiplication by the reciprocal of zero. And zero has no reciprocal. Now you know why you can't divide by zero.
Ok done with numbers.
Oh, while I'm thinking about it, multiplication of variables, like a and b, is usually written ab rather than axb. That's because sometimes one of the variable is x. So, rather than write axx, we use ax to represent the product of a and x. When dealing with numbers, use parentheses... 2x3 would be written as (2)(3)
Here are a few more rules you'll need to know...
If a=b, then b=a. That should make sense. If 1+2=3, then 3=1+2.
If a=b and b=c, then a=c. If 1+2+3=6 and 6=2x3, then 1+2+3=2x3.
If a=b, then a+c=b+c and ac=bc
if a+c=b+c, then a=b.
if ac=bc and c≠0, then a=b.
EVERYTHING you do from here on out will be governed by these rules. You really don't have to like it. That doesn't make it any less true. Math is that way.
