What are some good modern musicals?
I want to watch a modern (like, last fifty years) musical, but I don't know my whole selection. I don't care for the HSM franchise or Camp Rock, so nothing like that. The ones I've seen are: Rent, Phantom of the Opera, Spectacular, South Park, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. I know there MUST be more out there, but what are they? Thanks!
One of the most popular musicals right now is called Spring Awakening.
Set in late-nineteenth century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany, for about a century, due to its portrayal of masturbation, abortion, rape, bondage, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards.
It features amazing Broadway and film actors, such as Skylar Astin (Hamlet 2, Taking Woodstock), Lea Michelle (Glee), Jonathan B. Wright (Nick and Norah), and Jonathan Groff.
It's pretty inappropriate, but so smart and very charming -- you'd be hooked! I loved it.
