what is the average budget for kitten?
i am getting a pet soon and i chose a cat. I am getting one form the ASPCA in Manhattan,NY. I know how much one cost but can you tell me what the prices including vet prices, food and toys. thank you for your time
It depends on whether or not she is already vaccinated and spayed/ neutered. Vet prices vary so you need to call around and ask. Find out if the vet charges you a office fee every time you come in. That adds up. Some vets charge you an office fee for the first appointment, then just charge you for the services after that. They will have fees for emergency appointments, that is appointments scheduled or cancelled without 24 hour notice. The policies and fees differ among vets. About vaccinations, if your cat is going to be an indoor only cat, you can get away with giving only the rabies shot (it is probably the law) and feline distemper only. Feline distemper can be passed to your cat from your clothing, shoes, and flies. As for the things other than vet fees, here are the costs:
hard sided cat carrier for trips to the veternarian: $30.00
hair brush $3.00 but up to $20.00 for the furminator( which I never used the furminator)
human nail clippers or baby nail clippers for trimming her nails about $2.00
styptic powder in case her nails bleed ( I have never had this happen, but get some for emergency)
Hydrogen peroxide and Neosporin and band-aids in case the cat scratches you $7.00?
kitty bed unless the cat will sleep on your bed: $15.00
2 litter boxes or 2 dishpans from Wal-Mart or Dollar Store: $2.00 to $5.00 each
Litter box scoop or a large cheap spoon for scooping litter $1.00 to $3.00
Paper towels and bleach for cleaning and drying the litter box weekly. No need for paper towels if you can dry the box outdoors. $3.00
Newspaper to line the litter pan so the mess doesn't stick to the pan (usually free because you were going to buy a newspaper anyway)
battery operated toy like amazing string $25.00 (my cat's favorite toy)
few teaser wands $4.00 to up to $10.00 each for DA-Bird
cardboard scratchers $6.00 up to $12.00 my cats like the expensive ones on an incline best. You'll need at least two of these to keep her from scratching the furniture so much.
check out some books about cat care, especially if you have never had a cat before. At your library, it's free.
Cat food for a month about $6.00 or more. Canned is more about 50 cents a day.
Treats for training and bonding $3.00
Store brand kitty litter for a month is about $3.00. I use Tidy Cats because it supposedly has less dust and it is $6.00 for about a months worth (30 pounds).
You can designate two food bowls you already have for your kitty so there will be no charge for that.
Wet wipes to clean the cat's rear if necessary $3.00
Collar $3.00 up to $12.00 or more for the fancy ones.
$100.00 for a spot bot which is a necessity if your cat gets hairballs or has an accident and you have carpet.
packing tape with a dispenser for keeping hair off your clothes $3.00
yearly pet license and tags--check with your city or city's website for the price
I paid $15.00 for the rabies shots, $11.00 to check for worms ( I took a fresh stool sample from her litterbox, put it in a bag, then refrigerated it until I could get it to the vet. So I didn't have to pay them to get a stool sample from her. The stool sample should be taken from the litter box right after she poops. Put it in a baggie, then in the fridge, and get it to the vet within 24 hours of collection.), $25.00 for the initial office visit, FVRCP vaccine was $15.00. Then, a FVRCP booster was another $15.00, $13.00 for ear mite treatment. If she ever is to go outdoors, it is $35.00 for the FELV/FIV vaccine and you have to have her blood tested before you vaccinate for these diseases. The blood test was $35.00. I paid this in a mid-size city in Texas, and bet New York is more expensive, but maybe not. Ask friends if they know of a good vet that doesn't charge ridiculous prices.
It is best if the shelter knows if the cat is felv or fiv positive. If the cat is positive for these diseases, you will know for sure her vet bills will be expensive.
